Activity 2: Playing Games

Activity 2: Playing Games R20A-2.jpg
Hundreds of years ago, young Māori children were taught to play a number of games, including Poi Rakau, Ki O Rahi, Koruru Taonga and Poi Toa. Read about each of these four games on the Rangatahi tu Rangatira website. Have you played any of them before? Isn’t it cool how the games have been passed down for generations?

Choose one game, and on your blog, tell us the (i) name of the game, (ii) the goal or purpose of the game, and (iii) two rules.

You could try playing some of the games with a friend.

One of the games that I liked personally was Koruru Taonga also known as knuckle bones. The purpose of the game/goal of the game is to have 5 stones/rocks. Put all of the 5 stones/rocks in the palm of your hand. Throw it a little high into the air and try to catch at least one stone/rock. Say you caught two. You put one aside and then leave one in the palm of your hand. Don't pick up the ones that have fallen. Now with the stone/rock you still have in your hand. Throw it up in the air (Not to high) and try pick as many stones/rocks on the floor and catch the stone/rock at the same time.

  1. Hey there Annalisa, happy new year! I hope you are enjoying your holidays. It's great to see that you've been completing tasks too. I liked reading about this game because I used to play it when I was much younger. It is such a simple game yet so much fun.

It's great the way you've gone into a lot of detail when explaining the rules.
Have you been playing any games these holidays? Board games or video games or games outside perhaps?

    Thanks, Billy
