Activity 2: The Treaty of Waitangi

Activity 2: The Treaty of Waitangi
On 6 February 1840, a very special document was signed by the Māori chiefs and the British settlers in New Zealand. It was called the Treaty of Waitangi (Te Tiriti o Waitangi) and it outlined how the two groups would live together and work together in New Zealand. It was the first document of its kind to be signed in the entire world. The Treaty was signed in a place called Waitangi in northern New Zealand.

Follow this Waitangi village link to read about the village of Waitangi.

On your blog, tell us three fun things that you can do as a visitor in Waitangi. Which one would you like to do the most?

One fun thing you can do as a visitor at Waitangi village is watch the live kapa haka performances. You can also visit the treat house, where the treaty of Waitangi was signed and see a replica of the original treaty of Waitangi. You can also get the opportunity to see one of the largest Maori war canoes in the country. I would love to see the live kapa haka performance. I would be an amazing show.

  1. Hey there Annalisa, thanks for sharing your plans for when you visit Waitangi. It sounds like there are a lot of awesome things to do there. It would really cool to see a live kapa haka performance and also one of the largest Maori war canoes. That would be really impressive.

Have you ever been to Waitangi before?

    Thanks, Billy
