Day #2: New Zealand by Land and Sea

Day #2: New Zealand by Land and Sea
After a short ride through Auckland it is time to start exploring the rest of the country. Today you are going to venture around the north island of New Zealand to look at active volcanoes, gorgeous beaches, windswept coastline and lush, green bush. As a group, you will start at Rangitoto, the largest volcano in New Zealand before driving west to Karekare, a stunning beach on the outskirts of Auckland. You will finish the day by driving north to visit Tane Mahuta, the oldest living kauri tree in New Zealand.

Activity 1: After a very busy day of sightseeing you and your group drive from Tane Mahuta to your hotel in Dargaville. When you arrive you decide to sit down and record your thoughts in your travel diary.

Before you start writing, take a minute to read more about Rangitoto island, Karekare beach and Tane Mahuta.  On your blog, tell us which of the three places you most enjoyed visiting and why.
I loved visiting Rangitoto Island because of the wonderful landscape. I also liked the mountains you can walk through and see all of the beautiful views. I would also like to walk through the underground tunnels. I want to see the inside of New Zealand's youngest volcano. Another reason why I want to visit Rangitoto Island is because of its name. In Maori Rangitoto means bloody sky. Rangitoto comes from the phrase “Ngā Rangi-i-totongia-a Tama-te-kapua” which means “The days of the bleeding of Tama-te-kapua”. Tama-te-kapua was the captain of Arawa Waka and was bady wounded on the Island because of a lost war Tainui Iwi.

Activity 2: As an island nation, New Zealand is completely surrounded by water. It is the perfect place for people who like to swim or to sail! While in Dargaville, recovering from your busy day of sightseeing, you notice a number sailboats going by. One of the boats is manned by a young German girl named Laura Dekker. At the age of fourteen she sailed around the world the entire world by herself. You can watch a short video clip about her adventures here: Laura Dekker sailing trip.
Let’s imagine that you had the chance to interview Laura while in Dargaville. On your blog post five questions that you would ask her.
Questions:
  1. Did you feel scared sailing on the water by youself?
  2. How did you feel when it was stormy weather?
  3. How did you feel sailing on the water by yourself?
  4. What was your reaction when you saw land in the first 18 days?
  5. How did you manage all by yourself at sea?

Bonus Activity: When you finish your interview with Laura, you decide to keep on interviewing people. For this activity, your task is to conduct a real interview with an actual member of your family. Please ask them to think about their five (5) favourite things to do in the out-of-doors. They can be things that they enjoy doing on land or in the water. Post the list of outdoor activities on your blog.
I have interviewed my cousin.

  1. She likes to play rugby.
  2. She likes to have picnics with her family.
  3. She likes to play netball.
  4. She likes to go to the beach with her friends.
  5. She likes to play volleyball at the beach.

  3. Kia Orana Annalisa,

Welcome back to the Winter Learning Journey programme. My name is Jacinta and I will be blogging with you through the school holidays. How exciting!

I just want to congratulate you on the wonderful effort you have put in to complete Day 2 Activity 1, 2 and bonus activity. I can see you have explained Rangitoto being one of your favorite places to visit. I have also been wanting to visit Rangitoto Island to see the amazing views.

As you generated your questions for Laura, I was proud to see how well you considered relating to any mental and physical experiences she may have encountered on her journey. I am excited to see her response if we get a chance to meet her.

Thank you for making the time to interview your cousin. It is nice to see that there are activities that involve playing with friends and spending time with family.

Laura, I really look forward to seeing more amazing work. There are so many great activities for you to explore and I look forward to getting to know you more through your learning.
