Activity 1: Some Olympic athletes become famous not because they win but because they have an amazing attitude and great determination. They are sometimes called ‘underdogs.’ One of the most famous ‘underdogs’ in Olympic history was a man named Michael Edwards. He was a ski jumper from England who competed in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary, Canada. Although he came last in the event, he never gave up. Recently, a movie has been made about his life. It is called “Eddie the Eagle.” For this activity, watch the trailer for Eddie the Eagle and then post a summary of the movie on your blog. What is the movie about?
This movie is about a boy that wants to be in the Olympic but no one believes in him. He tries out for a ski jumper in the Olympics. He won't give up and will keep trying so he can be in the Olympics.
I am Year 8 student at St Pius X Catholic School in Auckland. I am in the SPX Nu'u Learning Space and my Teachers are Mrs Tui and Mrs Lauchlan.

If possible, choose one that you have never heard of before and read about it. After reading about the sport, post a short description of it on your blog. The post must include:
- The name of the sport
- The aim of the sport
- Two rules for the sport
The sport I have chosen is pankration. The aim of the game is if one person is knocked out or accepted defeat then the other opponent wins. Two rules of this game is that you can't bite the other opponent, and you can't poke them in the eye.

Day 1 Activity 2
Activity 2: In the ancient Olympic Games the winner of each event was called the Olympionic. Instead of a gold medal, the winner had a palm leaf placed in their hands and a crown placed on their head to show that they were the winner. Arguably one of the most famous Olympionics was a man named ‘Milo of Kroton’ (see picture below). Use Google to research ‘Milo of Kroton’ and post three interesting facts about him on your blog.
Fact 1 : He carried a calf every day for four years until it was a full sized ox to get strong and fit.
Fact 2 : Nobody knows when Milo died.
Fact 3 : He was attacked by a pack of wolves with one hand free and one hand stuck in a between a tree.

Winter Learning Journey - Activity 1 Day 1- Once upon a time in Olympia
DAY 1: Once Upon a Time in Olympia…
Fun Fact: The first ever Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece in 776 BC.
Our Olympic Journey starts thousands of years ago in a place called Olympia. Olympia was an ancient city in the country of Greece.
The ancient city of Olympia was the site of the first ever Olympic Games. They were held in 776 BC. During these games, men from Greece were invited to participate in one or more of the following events – running, jumping, discus throwing, wrestling, boxing, pankration, horse and chariot races, and the pentathlon. The ancient Olympic Games came to an end in 393 AD, approximately 1000 years after they had first started.
Activity 1: Let’s imagine that you were alive 2792 years ago and invited to compete in the first ever ancient Olympic Games. Which of these events: running, wrestling, boxing, pankration, horse racing and pentathlon would you compete in? Click on the name of the sport and it will take you to a site that tells you about the sport. On your blog tell us which sport you would choose
and why you chose it.
For the first activity I chose pentathlon, because we play similar games like this in samoa.
